 Float or Sink?

That was our challenge this week! We had to paper fold three different types of boats from the canoe, kayak and speedboat. Then we tested them in water to see how long they could float and how many blocks they would hold. Some of our boats lasted a long time and some of our boats sank. Next we made a boat out of tinfoil and like our paper boats some floated and held over 30 blocks. On Friday, we are creating floatation devices for our "Bears". Can hardly wait to see what we came up with and if they float.

Next week is the start of our spirit days. On Monday, June 21st it is wear orange day and it is National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Upcoming Spirit Days:

Monday, June 21 - Wear orange

Tuesday, June 22 - Western Day

Wednesday, June 23 - Wacky Hair or Sock Day

Thursday, June 24 - Inside out day

Friday, June 25 - Reading Day (wear a shirt with words or a picture on it)

Monday, June 28 - Beach Day

Tuesday, June 29 - Canada Day ( wear read and white)

Have a great weekend!

We have successfully finished the Amazing Race CBE and what an exciting time we had as we were "Better Together" as we worked through each challenge and road block. The work that went into organizing and planning the activities were greatly appreciated. We want to thank Mr. Van Es and his team for their creativity, inspiration and work.

We also spent some time last week creating Minecraft selfies. The idea was to incorporate symmetry into our art.

We also had the opportunity to work on following directions and using our rulers to create straight lines. The great thing was how we were able to help each other figure out the steps and after a few starts we are very proud of our work. As a class we are exploring Minecraft Education Edition and the prairies. Our challenge will be to select just one image of the prairies and our history and create it using this program before we are done for the school year.

 May 31 - June 4

We have been very busy participating in the Amazing Race CBE with 841 other classes and 18 000 students. Last week we travelled to Brazil and invited other classes to join us in our challenges. Our kinder buddies learned how to do the "wave" and participated with us in making a long line outside. This week we are back in Calgary and had to figure out the final message that was " We are better together".

In math we have been exploring inequalities and equalities using the Pan Balances and interlocking blocks.

In literacy this week we are continuing to work on story writing and adding descriptive details. Our stories range from creating a technological suit to allow our character to be in the daylight to a character who wants to dance.
We also attended a live reading of Nibi's Water Song by the author Sunshine Tenasco. She shared how she got her ideas and how the character was named after her daughter. This story complimented our work in science on liquids.

 May 3 - 7, 2021

What a week! We have joined over 831 classes in CBE to participate in the Amazing Race CBE. During this leg of the race we traveled to Great Britain, the home of hopscotch. Our detour/challenge was to perform 15 sets of hopscotch as a class each day or exceed that goal. We learned the basic hopscotch, iron cross, sumo, and the snowboarder version. As a group we exceeded our goal and performed over 130 sets during the week. We were also able to do our last set on Friday in the online environment. The last task they had given us was to create a Queen's Fascinator (hat) and wave as someone walked to the office by Friday. Due to our changing environment from in-person to online learning we adapted and put on our fancy hats and practiced our wave during our Google Meet. We can hardly wait to see what our next leg of the race will be and what our challenge might be!

Measurement was the math activities and tasks for this week. We measured objects in the class with nonstandard units of measurement and for us we used a paperclip. For our standard unit we used our cm rulers. Then we took our measuring outside after making 2 different paper airplanes. We estimated how far we thought they might travel and then measured the actual distance in metres.

We continued to develop our story writing as we focused on sound words and adding specific details to expand our writing. Our stories included us developing our characters and searching for the Aurora Borealis. On Thursday we shared our stories with a partner and a few of us with the whole class.

Next week we continue with our online learning and once again we cannot thank our parents for their amazing support and time.

Thank you to our parent council for the wonderful message on Monday morning.

It has been a very busy last few weeks as we finished our iMovie trailers about the daily life of the Acadians and shared the trailers with our parents on Google Classroom. We have also been developing our story writing skills by using the story writing recipe organizer. Currently we are writing our original characters into a story that includes a dog sled. As a class we have started to travel back to Iqaluit, Nunavut to explore and discover how the people lived long ago and today. Our story writing today involved developing our somebody portion of the recipe organizer. We can hardly wait to share it with everyone. During math we have been learning a few strategies for subtraction. Our strategies have included using a number line, the hundreds chart and base 10 blocks.

We want to thank all of our parents for their support and time this year! We appreciate all that they do for us. Also, we would like to thank Mr. Beckers for the time he has spent in our class these past few weeks. We have enjoyed learning new math games, his wonderful art characters and how to use the Jamboard! We wish him all the best as he continues on his education journey towards becoming a teacher! Good luck Mr. Beckers!

 March 15 - 19

We would like to welcome Mr. Beckers to our class and he will be with us until the end of April. Our week was very full as we learned about the artist Maud Lewis, a Canadian folk artist who was from Nova Scotia. We also started creating our final project about the Acadians in small groups. As the week progressed we have discussed how to work in groups, what that might look like, how we may have to compromise and most importantly how to share ideas and the work. We also had to learn how to use the  iMovie program. So, we went outside to take photos of things in nature we found interesting and then worked in our small groups to explore how to create and sequence a story.

For the reminder of the week we started to create images that we will use in our iMovie next week.

We also began to look at "Number Talks" during math class. During our talk we were presented with the questions 7-4 = ___ and 4 - 7 = ____. We had to answer the questions and demonstrate our thinking using both visuals and words.

Over the last few weeks we have been looking at quick questions (These are questions that can be answered quickly. An example would be how old are you?) and deep thinking questions (These require us to think about our answers and are not always obvious. For example, why, I wonder, what if, how would you solve...).
This week we have also spent time beginning to explore a 'Growth Mindset' and what it looks like. A growth mindset is when we know with practice we will get better. It is also believing in yourself. The students also looked at a what a fixed mindset was and what that might look like.
Students brought home their visual journal to share over the weekend. Please return it on Monday.
