 February 22 – 25

During math we continued to explore different addition strategies and this week we explored adding using expanded form and decomposing/composing to add two-digit numbers together. This strategy helps reinforce our flexibility of numbers and reinforces our understanding of place value.

Decomposing/Composing
          52 + 45

Step 1: 50 + 40  = 90         tens
Step 2: 2 + 5 =        7         ones
Step 3:                  97          sum

1. Break the addends into tens and ones (decomposing).
2. Add the tens together.
3. Add the ones together.
4. Add the tens and ones together (composing).

Expanded Form

 50 + 2
 40 + 5
 90 + 7
97

52 + 45 = 97

1. Expand both addends.
2. Solve vertically based on place value.
3. Add the ones, then the tens.

In social studies and writing we finished writing our persuasive paragraph and each student selected a way to represent their sight in Nova Scotia. On Monday, we will vote and graph our results as to where we will travel in and around Nova Scotia.

Our kindness week continued and everyone worked on filling their “Kindness Calendar” with a variety of acts of kindness. During the week we read, “Rock on Kindness! Pass it on!”  by Stepheni Curran.

We then drew rocks with words of kindness on them and placed them around the Embassy and our hallways.
