 February 22 – 25

During math we continued to explore different addition strategies and this week we explored adding using expanded form and decomposing/composing to add two-digit numbers together. This strategy helps reinforce our flexibility of numbers and reinforces our understanding of place value.

Decomposing/Composing
          52 + 45

Step 1: 50 + 40  = 90         tens
Step 2: 2 + 5 =        7         ones
Step 3:                  97          sum

1. Break the addends into tens and ones (decomposing).
2. Add the tens together.
3. Add the ones together.
4. Add the tens and ones together (composing).

Expanded Form

 50 + 2
 40 + 5
 90 + 7
97

52 + 45 = 97

1. Expand both addends.
2. Solve vertically based on place value.
3. Add the ones, then the tens.

In social studies and writing we finished writing our persuasive paragraph and each student selected a way to represent their sight in Nova Scotia. On Monday, we will vote and graph our results as to where we will travel in and around Nova Scotia.

Our kindness week continued and everyone worked on filling their “Kindness Calendar” with a variety of acts of kindness. During the week we read, “Rock on Kindness! Pass it on!”  by Stepheni Curran.

We then drew rocks with words of kindness on them and placed them around the Embassy and our hallways.

Kindness Awareness/Buddy Activities

It all started with the question, ”How does kindness lead to HEART?”, 100 day celebration and meeting of Mrs. Steckly & Ms. Fieldstone’s kindergartens, Ms. Mann’s Grade 1s and our class sharing the story The Kindness Book by Todd Parr over Google Meet on Tuesday. Each class then explored what kindness was and found a way to connect the 100th day celebration. We folded 100 hearts and created a large heart that now hangs in the Embassy.

On Friday we discovered that K.A.N (Kindness Awareness Ninja) was found throughout the school and a message from K.A.N. was sent to the classes. K.A.N challenged us to complete acts of kindness. This goes with Pink Shirt day (Feb. 24) and kindness week starting on Monday, February 22, 2021. The best part was there was no end date as to when our kindness acts have to stop. We are looking forward to future activities with our buddies, looking for K.A.N next week and acts of kindness.

Upcoming Dates:

Wednesday, February 24 - Pink Shirt Day
Friday, March 12 - Non-instruction Day
Friday, March 19 - Un-Birthday Day

February 8 – 10

We started the week by selecting a place each of us would like to visit in Nova Scotia. Then we researched reasons why we wanted to see a particular sight. After having come up with three reasons we started our draft for our persuasive paragraph and will be presenting our sights and reasons to the class in the coming week. We are planning on voting after each student has presented their sight. Our results will be out into a graph and the top sights will be added to our tour of Nova Scotia and its past.

During math we started adding 2-digit numbers together. We rolled our die to create two 2-digit numbers that we added together. Some of us created numbers that involved regrouping so we looked at the importance of place value and regrouping when our number was greater than 9. In the upcoming week we will take time to practice regrouping when adding 2-digit numbers.

In the upcoming week we will start our “Kindness Calendar Challenge”. It will start with us looking at our guiding question “How does kindness lead to HEART?” and we are excited that our kindergarten buddies will be joining us to explore our first activity. We will be combining the 100th day of school and our kindness work. It will start by sharing The Kindness Book by Todd Parr on a Google Meet.

Persuasive Poems

The week started by reading the picture book, "I Wanna Iguana" by Karen Kaufman Orloff.

A young boy tries to convince his mom why he wants an iguana. As a class we discussed his arguments and his mom's responses. We brainstormed some ideas that we might want to persuade our parents or siblings of what we would like to have. Our ideas ranged from treehouses, ball pits, dragons, dinosaurs, Firebirds, a zipline down the stairs in our house, a hedgehog, and even a worm farm. We took our ideas and created arguments that we turned into a persuasive poem. One of the skills we are working on this term is to edit our written work for spelling, capital letters and punctuation. First, we edit our own work then a peer edits our work next.

We also welcomed two students into our classroom on Monday and spent a few days inside due to the temperature outside.

Upcoming Dates:

February 11 - 12  No School Teachers' Convention
February 15 - Family Day - No school
